The
Science/Health Career Academy’s vision is to prepare young women to be
leaders in those fields of science and technology traditionally pursued by
men. This four-year Academy develops
students for careers in the fields of science, medicine and health care. The Science/Health Career Academy (SHCA)
includes a rigorous curriculum emphasizing all the various sciences, implementing
technology in all courses. Students in
the Academy complete 70 units in science between freshmen and senior year,
more than any other school program in Southern California. SHCA students
will also complete more than 200 work-study hours by the time they graduate
from the Academy at Glendale Memorial Hospital, Glendale Community College, USC, and UCLA. On
campus students work with state of the art laptops using a wireless internet
connection and progressive software to study topics that include human
movement, various systems of the body, scientific analysis, forces of the
earth and objects, and chemical compound reactions. The redesigned science labs allow for
real-time research, access to current data, and distance learning with
colleges and universities. Guest
speakers frequently visit classes and students are taken to Glendale Memorial Hospital for a series of seminars each year.
Recognizing
that practical applications are an integral part of learning, SHCA students
do laboratory work at Glendale Community College, UCLA, and USC and use their academic knowledge in various medical and
research fields at Glendale Memorial Hospital. Each year
students in the Academy will attend a field trip, beginning as a freshman
with the California Science Center to experience elements of chemistry, physics, and
biology. Students visit the George C.
Page museum as sophomores to learn more about geology, ecology, and
paleontology. An overnight experience
to the habitat of the Olympic Peninsula, rain forest in Washington State, or ocean off the Northern California Coast will provide the junior class with the opportunity to
conduct research in marine biology, oceanology, kymatology, and ecology.
The senior class of SHCA students travels to Costa Rica, Panama, or Guatemala to experience a diverse and fascinating natural
habitat, researching the ecology, geology, meteorology, and biology of the
rich environment.
Students
graduating from the Academy receive a special seal on their diploma
indicating their successful completion of the Science/Health Career Academy.
