Letter from the Athletic Director
June 12, 2008
We are happy you have decided to participate in our
Summer Sports Program, which officially takes place from June 16 through August
1, 2008. We expect that the
following sports will be offered as we meet our minimum participants in
each sport: JV/Varsity Volleyball, JV/Varsity Basketball,
Cross Country, Soccer, and Conditioning- (exercising,
running, swimming, and nutrition). The summer program and next school
year’s sports program will be administered by the new HFHSCP Athletic Director, Mr. Ernest Siy. During the summer he will coach the
basketball teams, faculty member Mrs. Shelley Sonner will coach the
volleyball teams, and newcomer Mr. Juan Nagore
will coach the soccer and cross country teams, along with qualified adult
volunteers. Also, Dr. Dennis Buckley
will again be on campus for sports
physical exams after school on Friday,
June 13; the cost is only $15, payable to him on the day.
These physicals are good for a calendar year.
The coaches will soon have their specific practices and
games schedules available, but generally speaking, practices are held on
campus, at the Glendale YMCA, and at nearby fields and tracks in the
afternoons for all sports nearly every day.
Games are scheduled in special summer leagues at least once a week
(except for Cross Country), so this is truly an extensive and worthwhile
program for the participants.
JV/Varsity Basketball plays at Providence High
School in Burbank on Thursday evenings. JV Volleyball plays
on Wednesday evenings at Gabrielino
High School in San Gabriel and Varsity
Volleyball plays on Friday evenings at Gabrielino.
Soccer will compete on designated afternoons and evenings
with 6-8 person teams at St. Genevieve High School
in Panorama City,
San Gabriel Mission
in Alhambra, and Bishop Conaty
in Los Angeles.
Cross Country and Conditioning
practices will be using the above mentioned facilities as well as the
Rose Bowl jogging course, the beach, hillside trails, and other tracks.
It is important that all student-athletes and their
parents/guardians are aware of our HFHSCP Summer Sports Program
policies. All student-athletes must
be physically, disciplinarily, and financially in good standing in order to
be able to participate. (Although there is no academic GPA requirement for
the Summer Sports Program, if a student’s 2nd semester Report
Card GPA is below 2.0, she will not be eligible to participate in the Fall unless
summer school remediation courses raise her GPA to a minimum of 2.0 by the
start of school.)
Each student-athlete is required to pay for
whichever sport(s) she registers and the Summer Sports Program Fees are
based on the following:
·
One sport and/or conditioning: $200.00; two
sports and conditioning: $375.00 (50% deposit was due by May 12, 2008) All balances must be paid in full by
June 13, 2008.
These fees, along with fundraisers, must cover coaches’
salaries, facilities rentals, summer leagues, uniform rentals, equipment,
and transportation. (If extra
tournaments are added to the schedule there will be an additional
fee.) Each student-athlete is
required to participate in at least one official fundraiser or be assessed
an additional $50 fee. There will be at least one Saturday car wash and
other fundraiser opportunities for parents during the summer. These activities help defray the enormous
cost of offering such a program. Parents/Guardians may also receive
approval for earning service hours by driving student-athletes, bringing
drinks/treats to games, and working at fundraisers.
All student-athletes must have their medical
release/sports physical, acknowledgement/consent form, and Code of Ethics
forms on file with the Athletic Department before they practice or
otherwise participate in our sports programs. All forms are available at the AD Office
or the AD shelves downstairs in the main building. If you have any questions or concerns,
please contact me as soon as possible at any of the numbers above.
Go Gaels!
