Elizabeth Mullen ’81 Honored

Elizabeth Mullen, Class of 1981, will receive the "Companions on the Journey Award" at the Opening Session of Youth Day at the Anaheim Convention Center on Thursday, February 28, 2008.  Elizabeth is one of six adults to receive this year's award which is the highest recognition that a diocese may confer on adults who demonstrate excellence in ministry with young people.  She was chosen because of her outstanding work in several areas: LaSalle High School, Pasadena, as part of the Christian Leadership Institute offered by the Archdiocese, for her support of youth ministry at the parish and diocesan levels and for her years of leadership within the community of ministers that work with young people.
Congratulations, Elizabeth, for your outstanding service on behalf of youth!  Holy Family High School College Preparatory is proud of you.

Led by Phonathon chair, Fran Manion ’65 (left of above photo), Holy Family High School College Prep’s Annual Phonathon took place on October 16th and 17th at Glendale Nissan Car Dealership on south Brand.  Many alumnae were contacted by phone either directly or by phone message.  While not all could be reached in just two evenings of calling, those who were, responded very favorably to this once-a-year appeal.  The enthusiastic alumnae callers were from various classes:

BVMs Honored

Memorable Event

On August 18, 2007, the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary were honored by Holy Family Parish at a dinner-dance in the grade school auditorium which was creatively decorated by parish volunteers.  This event was part of the parish’s 100th Anniversary celebration which began last December and will conclude this December on the feast of the Holy Family.  About 18 BVM Sisters were present for this very joyful occasion which included delicious food and enjoyable music and   provided  a wonderful opportunity for the Sisters and parishioners to renew long-standing relationships.  Also present, besides the Sisters from the convent and the area, were the president of the BVM Community, Sister Joellen McCarthy, two Regional Representives, Sisters Theresa Caluori and Bette Gambonini, and Sister Agnes O’Connor, former teacher and principal of Holy Family Grade School.  The Sisters are grateful to Father Shea, the Pastor of Holy Family, for providing such a special event at which to express the parish’s appreciation and gratitude.

Remembering the Past

The BVMs have ministered in Holy Family Parish since 1925, staffing both schools for 82 years.  The Sisters who have served the parish during those years now number 189.   Many of them  have died,  but the following Sisters who taught at Holy Family  High School  are still with us,  most of them retired and living  at or near Mount Carmel, the BVM Motherhouse in Dubuque, Iowa: Sisters Eleanor (Marie) Craggs,  Pauline Flosi, Realino Lynch, Margretine Smith,  Patricita O’Donnell,  Kathryn Maher, Dolores  Kramer, Florence Wiatrak,  Rosemary Sage, Jane McDonald (Bonaventure), Clemenza Finney, and Eugena Sullivan.  Sisters Grace Andrea Carolan, Frances Dolan (Franciscus), and Isabelle Hennessey (Vaune) live at Wright Hall in Chicago.  Sister Diane Barabe lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Sisters Marilyn Wilson and Elizabeth Avalos in Sunnyvale, California, and Sister Annette Petty in Fawnskin, California.  Former teachers living at Holy Family Convent are Sisters Suzanne and Mary Jeanne Stopper and Sister Vicki Smurlo. With great joy and gratitude, we express our appreciation to all the Sisters as well as the many lay teachers who have shared their time and talents with the thousands of students who attended Holy Family Grade and High Schools since 1925.

Yvonne Keefer Dutton, Class of  ‘44,  Retires

On January 15, 2008, Yvonne Dutton retired at age 81 from the South Coast Plaza Nordstrom in Costa Mesa. After raising eight children, Yvonne began her first career outside her home at age 60.  She started at the cosmetics counter, but before long managers at the store noticed her customer-friendly attitude and assigned her to the concierge desk which at that time was just being opened.

In that position, Yvonne helped to organize buses to bring potential customers from far-out cities like Apple Valley, Palm Springs and Victorville, accepted payments, answered the phone,  and offered directions. Giving wise advice and comforting those in need was her specialty. In her words, “Our main thing is to be there for the customers and do anything they ask.”

The assistant manager at Nordstrom’s said of her, “Yvonne will be missed.  Her presence speaks to people.  We have customers who grew up with Yvonne; when she’s on vacation, they ask where she is.” One of Nordstrom’s customers commented, “She was very polite, very nice and very complimentary.  She complimented my matching blouse and earrings.  Now I’m feeling good about myself for the rest of the day.”

Happy retirement, Yvonne!  We are proud of you! May your future be filled with faith, family and fun with your ten grandchildren!
